Taiwan’s National Security Bureau recently informed parliament that the island is facing a surge in hostile digital activity from China. According to the intelligence agency, Beijing has intensified cyberattacks and the spread of deceptive information as local elections approach next month. Data indicates that Taiwan experienced an average of 2.6 million daily cyberattacks during the first nine months of 2026, with a notable increase since June. These operations reportedly target critical sectors, including telecommunications, defense supply chains, and academic research institutions. Taipei officials state that these actions are intended to weaken public trust in the government, disrupt defense capabilities, and hinder international cooperation. China, which maintains that Taiwan is part of its sovereign territory, continues to exert pressure on the democratic island through these multifaceted digital campaigns.
