Professor Anu Muhammad has cautioned that leasing the New Mooring Container Terminal at Chittagong Port to international entities poses significant risks to Bangladesh's national sovereignty. Speaking at a roundtable discussion organized by the Media and Civil Rights Society, the economist argued that the facility's management should remain under domestic control. He emphasized that instead of outsourcing operations, the government should focus on improving internal infrastructure, streamlining bureaucratic processes, and reforming customs procedures to boost efficiency. According to Professor Muhammad, the potential involvement of foreign firms in such a strategic asset extends beyond simple economic implications, raising serious concerns regarding military and political security. He urged authorities to prioritize national interests and strengthen local capabilities rather than relying on external corporations to operate critical maritime infrastructure.
