Apple has modified its promotional imagery for the new iPad mini on its South Korean website to exclude a hand gesture that has become a source of social friction in the country. While the global version of the advertisement features a hand holding the device to emphasize its 5.4mm thickness, the South Korean site displays the tablet without the hand. The specific gesture, known locally as "jipge-son," involves pinching the thumb and index finger together. In South Korea, this motion is often perceived by certain online communities as a derogatory reference to male genital size. Although the technology company has not issued an official statement regarding the alteration, the decision is widely viewed as a preemptive measure to avoid potential backlash associated with the symbol's sensitive cultural connotations.
