The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines has declared red and yellow alerts for the Visayas region this Friday. These measures follow a significant reduction in available power capacity caused by the forced shutdown of 22 plants and the reduced output of 20 others, totaling 782.2 megawatts of lost supply. Specifically, a red alert is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., when demand is projected to hit 2,536 megawatts while supply remains capped at 2,359 megawatts. Yellow alerts are also set for the afternoon and evening hours. Key facilities, including units at Therma Visayas and KEPCO SPC, remain offline, while limited power imports from Mindanao further constrain the grid. These alerts serve as a warning that power reserves are insufficient to meet the anticipated peak consumption levels during these timeframes.
