The Bangladeshi parliament recently approved the Transfer of Property (Amendment) Bill of 1882, which introduces a legal mechanism allowing donors to retain usage rights over gifted property throughout their lifetime. Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman addressed concerns raised by opposition parties and religious groups, emphasizing that the legislation does not interfere with religious practices. Instead, the primary objective of the amendment is to safeguard elderly parents. The government observed a growing trend of children evicting their parents from homes after receiving property titles. By enabling parents to maintain occupancy rights, the state aims to provide security for the elderly and prevent them from becoming destitute in their later years. The minister highlighted that this policy is a social protection measure designed to ensure parents are not forced out of their residences by their heirs.
