The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has introduced a draft notification aimed at prohibiting the use of the term "paneer" for analogue dairy products. These synthetic substitutes, which replace traditional milk solids and fats with vegetable oils, are often marketed to resemble genuine dairy paneer. The regulator intends to prevent consumer confusion regarding the composition and quality of these items. Under the new proposal, manufacturers would be barred from utilizing the word "paneer" in product names, labeling, or promotional materials. This move follows similar prohibitions already enacted by several Indian states, including Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Karnataka. The FSSAI has requested public comments on the draft regulation within a 60-day period following its official release.
