The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has introduced a draft notification aimed at prohibiting the use of the term "paneer" for analogue dairy products. These synthetic substitutes often utilize vegetable oils instead of milk solids, resulting in lower production costs. By restricting this labeling, the regulator intends to prevent consumer confusion regarding the composition and quality of food items. The proposed rules would forbid manufacturers from employing the word "paneer" in product names, packaging, or promotional materials for non-dairy alternatives. The FSSAI is currently seeking public input on this proposal for a period of 60 days. This move follows similar prohibitions already enacted by various Indian states, including Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh, which have previously moved to halt the sale and manufacture of these imitation dairy goods.
