The Office of the Government Attorney in Kathmandu has initiated two legal proceedings against Sagarmatha Digital Pvt. Ltd. regarding allegations of copyright violation. The cases involve songwriters Saroj KC and Shashi Sharma Majgaiyan, who claim the firm’s director, Hira Bahadur KC, misappropriated their musical works. The plaintiffs allege that the company utilized their songs for commercial gain without authorization and failed to disclose the resulting revenue. Consequently, the government is seeking financial restitution totaling 9.5 million rupees, with 3.5 million rupees requested for Saroj KC and 6 million rupees for Shashi Sharma Majgaiyan. These lawsuits, filed at the Kathmandu District Court, highlight ongoing concerns regarding the unauthorized exploitation of creative intellectual property and the lack of transparency in royalty distribution within the local music industry.
