Member of Parliament Faiszer Musthapha has formally requested that the legislature accelerate the process of enacting a ban on social media access for individuals under the age of 16. During a recent parliamentary session, Musthapha highlighted significant concerns regarding the impact of digital platforms on the mental health, educational development, and general safety of minors. He confirmed that a private member’s bill is currently undergoing legal drafting in coordination with the Ministry of Justice. The proposed legislation aims to limit access to major platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, while providing specific exemptions. Musthapha emphasized that this initiative is intended to protect youth from online dangers rather than discourage technological advancement, citing similar regulatory efforts currently being pursued in nations such as the United Kingdom and Australia as a framework for the proposed Sri Lankan policy.
