Israel has designated Joel Lion as its new chargĂ© dâaffaires in Ankara, marking the return of a high-ranking Israeli diplomat to Turkey since late 2023. Lion, a seasoned diplomat who previously served as ambassador to Moldova and Armenia, submitted his credentials to the Turkish Foreign Ministry on Wednesday. While the Israeli Embassy remained operational with local staff during the absence of diplomatic personnel due to security concerns, the ambassadorial position has been empty since the retirement of Irit Lillian. This appointment is intended to re-establish a direct high-level communication channel between the two nations. The move comes after a period where Israeli diplomats were withdrawn following security arrangements coordinated by both governments.
