Tan transitioned into politics in 2020, following a career spanning over three decades in the private sector, where he initially worked as a doctor and later as a healthcare entrepreneur. He explained that he chose to serve the nation despite having a successful private career that offered greater financial rewards than a ministerial position. Tan underscored his desire to contribute to the country and its citizens, acknowledging that this sentiment might not be shared by everyone.
