The traditional culture of Jeju's haenyeo, female divers known for harvesting marine resources through breath-hold diving, is observing its tenth anniversary since being added to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. To honor this milestone, the 19th annual Jeju Haenyeo Festival commenced this Saturday. The two-day event, hosted near the Jeju Haenyeo Museum in Gujwa-eup, focuses on reflecting upon the significance of the UNESCO designation received ten years ago. These divers remain a vital part of the island's identity, maintaining ancient techniques that allow them to gather seafood without the use of supplemental oxygen equipment.
