A practitioner of Korean medicine has been ordered to pay a 20 million won fine by the Daejeon District Court following the death of a 92-year-old patient. The incident occurred in August 2022 when the patient sought treatment for back pain. During the session, the practitioner performed acupuncture on the patient's chest, which resulted in a fatal tear to the heart muscle. The patient passed away approximately two and a half hours after the procedure. Legal authorities argued that the practitioner was negligent, noting a failure to monitor the patient's vital signs or provide a proper explanation regarding the potential risks associated with the treatment.
