A sudden voltage dip affecting a major power line in Hong Kong triggered widespread elevator entrapments and false fire alarms on Tuesday afternoon. CLP Power reported a brief instability along a 400-kilovolt transmission line connecting Lai Chi Kok and Tsz Wan Shan at approximately 1:09 p.m. Although the incident did not result in a total power outage, the fluctuation caused lights to flicker and sensitive electronic systems to malfunction throughout parts of Kowloon and the New Territories. By 3:00 p.m., the Fire Services Department had responded to 179 reports of individuals stuck in lifts, with the majority of incidents occurring in the Yau Tsim Mong district. Additionally, authorities addressed 39 false fire alarm activations resulting from the electrical disturbance. Utility providers are currently investigating the cause of the voltage drop.
