A 4K-restored edition of the 1987 Taiwanese drama Osmanthus Alley was recently showcased at the 18th Lumière Festival in Lyon, France. Directed by Chen Kun-hou, the film features actress Lu Hsiao-fen portraying a resilient woman navigating the social challenges of the early 20th century. The Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute (TFAI) spearheaded the restoration project, successfully recovering the original Taiwanese Hokkien audio that had been replaced by Mandarin in the initial release. The screening was attended by the director, the lead actress, and TFAI Chairman Arthur Chu, with support from the Taiwan Cultural Center in Paris. Festival director Thierry Frémaux highlighted the significance of Taiwan's cinematic history during the event. This restoration allows contemporary viewers to observe historical Taiwanese lifestyles while preserving the nation's cultural heritage for future generations.
