Kyoto University has achieved the 16th position in the latest ShanghaiRanking for mathematics, standing as the only Asian institution within the global top 20. The evaluation, which analyzed research output, faculty quality, and international collaboration, placed the Japanese university ahead of notable institutions from China and Singapore. While Chinese and Singaporean schools have shown significant growth in academic rankings and student performance assessments, Kyoto University outperformed them in this specific bibliometric study. The ShanghaiRanking methodology relies on data from 2020 to 2024, focusing strictly on research impact and publication metrics rather than undergraduate teaching or student experience. With a total score of 249.7, Kyoto University’s performance highlights its sustained influence in mathematical research, distinguishing it from other regional peers that appeared further down the list, such as Tsinghua University and the National University of Singapore.
