National Bank Chairman Timur Suleimenov recently clarified how fluctuations in the national base rate affect existing and future bank deposits. He emphasized that financial institutions are legally prohibited from unilaterally altering interest rates on fixed-term deposit agreements once they have been signed. Consequently, if a customer secures a specific rate for a set duration, that percentage remains guaranteed until the contract expires, regardless of broader monetary policy shifts. Suleimenov also noted that savings accounts with withdrawal limitations often provide depositors with more competitive returns. By committing funds for extended periods, customers can potentially access higher yields offered by banks. This guidance aims to assist savers in navigating the current economic environment and understanding their rights when managing personal finances amidst potential interest rate adjustments.
