Pakistan Railways is preparing to launch a 2.5 billion dollar infrastructure project to construct a 480-kilometre rail line connecting Karachi and Rohri. Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi announced that this initiative represents the inaugural phase of the Main Line-1 project, which is scheduled to commence construction in January 2027. The government aims to enhance safety standards and mitigate the frequency of accidents on this route, which has historically been prone to derailments due to deteriorating infrastructure. Between early 2022 and the present, the national network experienced 349 derailment incidents, highlighting the urgent need for modernization. Authorities are currently engaged in market consultations and pre-bid preparations to ensure the project adheres to the timeline established by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
