Employees at public-sector banks in India have announced plans for a nationwide strike scheduled from September 28 to 30. The industrial action, driven by demands for a five-day work week, coincides with the end of the month when many individuals receive their salaries. This timing poses potential challenges for banking customers, including expatriates in the UAE who rely on these services for remittances and financial transactions. To mitigate the impact of this disruption, the Reserve Bank of India has authorized branches, offices, and ATMs to remain operational on Sunday, September 27. This intervention aims to prevent a five-day total closure of banking facilities. The labor unions involved have been advocating for the transition to a shorter work week for several years, citing a previous agreement reached in 2024 as part of their ongoing negotiations for improved working conditions.
