Employees at public-sector banks in India have scheduled a nationwide strike from September 28 to 30 to advocate for a five-day work week. This industrial action, which aims to secure permanent Saturday holidays, coincides with the end of the month, a period when many individuals typically receive their salaries. Consequently, the walkout is expected to hinder banking operations for millions of customers, including those residing in the UAE. To mitigate potential service gaps, the Reserve Bank of India has authorized banking facilities and currency centers to remain open on Sunday, September 27. This intervention prevents a potential five-day period of total closure. The labor unions have been campaigning for this transition to a shorter working week for several years, citing a previous agreement reached in 2024 as the basis for their current demands.
