A vulnerable Indian flapshell turtle, often referred to as a butterfly turtle, was recently discovered near a private home in Urlabari, Morang. Local residents, including Prabhu Dilungchha Rai and environmental researcher Gobinda Prasad Pokharel, collaborated to ensure the animal's safe relocation. The group successfully transported the turtle to the Beteni Wetland, returning it to its natural environment. According to the IUCN Red List, this species is currently classified as vulnerable. Researcher Pokharel highlighted a positive shift in public attitude, noting that while these animals were historically hunted for food, there is now a significant increase in community awareness regarding wildlife conservation and the protection of endangered species.
