Dame Judi Dench, the 91-year-old Oscar-winning performer, has confirmed her departure from the acting profession due to the progression of age-related macular degeneration. Diagnosed with the condition in 2012, the veteran star explained during a BBC Radio 4 interview that her deteriorating eyesight now prevents her from reading, performing in plays, or participating in film productions. Beyond the professional impact, Dench noted that her vision impairment complicates daily interactions, occasionally leading to confusion when identifying people. Reflecting on the challenges of advanced age, she expressed a pragmatic view, noting that there are few positive aspects to the aging process. Her announcement marks the end of a storied career defined by her significant contributions to both stage and screen, as she can no longer manage the visual demands required for her craft.
