The Russian Ministry of Justice has officially classified the independent news outlet Novaya Gazeta as a foreign agent. Officials cited the publication's criticism of the military campaign in Ukraine and the dissemination of information deemed inaccurate regarding national elections as primary reasons for this decision. Alongside this move, the government added over 100 individuals associated with the outlet to its registry of persons affiliated with foreign agents, including political figure Nikolai Rybakov. Novaya Gazeta, whose former editor-in-chief Dmitry Muratov is a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, shifted to digital-only operations following the implementation of strict censorship regulations in 2022. This latest regulatory action also affected several other individuals and an academic journal, all accused of circulating content from prohibited organizations or spreading misinformation about state policies. The designation mandates that the outlet include specific disclaimers on all public communications.
