Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has denied a request from the high-powered committee tasked with defining the Aravalli range for a six-month extension. The panel, led by Kanchan Devi, had sought more time until February 2027, prompting the Chief Justice to remark that the delay appeared to coincide with his upcoming retirement. The Supreme Court bench ordered the committee to finalize its report by November 30, 2026, and to work continuously to meet this target. Additionally, the court requested interim reports on urgent matters to address environmental concerns without waiting for the full study. This committee was established to scientifically redefine the Aravalli landscape after previous criteria faced criticism for potentially facilitating mining in ecologically sensitive areas. The court has scheduled the next hearing for December 2 to review the progress of the mandate.
