The Ministry of Digital Development and Information in Singapore has announced plans to table new laws in early 2027 aimed at enhancing online protections for minors. The proposed regulatory framework centers on two primary objectives: robust age verification systems and the implementation of safer digital platform features. Social media companies will be mandated to adopt effective age-checking mechanisms that comply with existing Personal Data Protection Act requirements. Furthermore, the government intends to enforce a 'safer-by-design' approach, compelling platforms to restrict access to harmful content and mitigate risks associated with unsolicited interactions. Additional measures under consideration include regulating specific platform functionalities, such as autoplay settings and daily usage time limits, to create a more secure online environment for younger demographics.
