These statements, shared on social media, follow Senior Minister K Shanmugam's announcement on September 5. Shanmugam revealed he had requested police investigate racist remarks concerning Singaporeans reported missing during recent floods in Nepal, and comments related to Singapore Airlines' investment in Air India. PM Wong previously discussed the essence of Singaporean identity and the nation's desired future during the National Day rally on August 23. He highlighted the necessity for Singapore's identity to remain welcoming and inclusive, asserting that anyone embracing the country's values and lifestyle is considered Singaporean, regardless of their background.
