Professor G.L. Peiris, a Senior Advisor to the Prime Minister and Chairman of the Sri Lanka Podujana Permanua (SLPP), has indicated that the Provincial Council (PC) elections, which have been postponed for several years, are projected to occur before the close of this year. Speaking at a party briefing, Professor Peiris underscored the significant function of Provincial Councils in the daily lives of citizens, mentioning that they are tasked with 36 responsibilities under the 9th Schedule of the 13th Constitutional Amendment. He asserted that the right to participate in elections is a fundamental entitlement of the populace. Peiris further clarified that following the general elections scheduled for August 2020, the incoming administration would focus on organizing these Provincial Council polls. He confirmed that the elections would proceed regardless of the general election outcomes, noting Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa's consistent record of holding elections.
