Transport Minister Bimal Rathnayake announced that the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) plans to incorporate 800 additional buses into its fleet by the conclusion of the year. This expansion includes 600 imported air-conditioned vehicles and 200 units financed directly by the SLTB. During the inauguration of the Kadawatha Metro Depot, the Minister stated that the Metro Bus Service fleet will reach 122 vehicles this month, with plans to increase that number to 172 by early next year. Furthermore, the government intends to extend these metro services beyond the Western Province to include Galle, Kandy, and Jaffna. The Ministry is also exploring public-private partnerships to facilitate the operation of these expanded transit services. Cabinet approval is currently pending for the acquisition of 50 additional buses to support this broader modernization effort.
