The Federation of University Teachers’ Associations (FUTA) has scheduled a one-day strike for tomorrow to protest the deteriorating conditions within Sri Lanka's public university sector. FUTA Secretary Charudatta Ilangasinghe stated that the union conducted various actions last week to draw attention to the critical shortage of academic staff. He warned that current staffing deficits are preventing the enrollment of students who recently completed their 2025 Advanced Level examinations. While the government has proposed the creation of 50 new state universities, FUTA argues that the immediate focus must remain on maintaining the standards of the 17 existing institutions. The association remains open to dialogue with government officials to address these systemic challenges and ensure the sustainability of public higher education.
