Sunanda Nair, a 62-year-old artist, describes her deep personal connection to dance, which she views as essential to her existence. Her artistic path began with Bharatanatyam at age six, followed by Kathakali, before she ultimately dedicated herself to Mohiniattam. Nair achieved academic milestones by becoming the first student in India to secure both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in this specific Keralan dance style. She later completed a doctorate at Mumbai’s Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya, where she explored the lyrical feminism inherent in the art form. Although she relocated to the United States in 2000 for her husband's career and initially considered stepping away from her craft, she continued her involvement in the field, evolving from a student and teacher into an internationally recognized exponent of the dance.
