The Supreme Court of the Philippines has officially dropped a contempt case filed against Senator Vicente Sotto III. The legal action followed the senator's public criticism regarding the impeachment proceedings involving Vice President Sara Duterte. In a ruling authored by Senior Associate Justice Marvic M.V.F. Leonen, the court determined that Sotto’s comments did not constitute contempt of court. The justices concluded that the senator's statements, which questioned the judiciary's understanding of congressional rules and the constitutional implications of their decision, did not aim to incite public distrust or impede the justice system. This decision reinforces the constitutional protection afforded to individuals who express critical views of judicial rulings. The petition against Sotto had been initiated by lawyer Manuelito delos Reyes Luna and other parties following the senator's media appearances and social media activity.
