The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in Taiwan is developing a demonstration plant designed to produce 500 metric tons of rare-earth materials annually by 2030. This initiative aims to fulfill 50 percent of the nation's requirements, mitigating risks associated with potential export restrictions from China. ITRI President Chang Pei-zen indicated that construction is scheduled for completion by late 2028, with the facility eventually transitioning to private sector management. While Taiwan's total consumption is modest, these materials are vital for industrial machinery and semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Currently, ITRI operates a small-scale experimental line, but the new project represents a significant scaling effort. The institute is currently navigating technical challenges related to complex separation processes and is coordinating with the National Science and Technology Council regarding funding and commercial incentives to attract private investment for the domestic supply chain.
