This downward trend is mirrored across many OECD nations, where average scores have also reached historic lows. Experts attribute the decline in U.S. reading proficiency to shifts in classroom habits, such as a reduced focus on full-length books. Furthermore, the assessment highlighted concerns regarding digital literacy, noting that students who utilize artificial intelligence for academic tasks performed worse than their peers. Additionally, many students struggle with critical evaluation of information, leaving them susceptible to misinformation. Despite these declines, the U.S. remains near or above the OECD average as other global education systems also face performance challenges.
