Former law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim has called on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to prioritize national interests during ongoing discussions regarding oil and gas rights in Sarawak. Ahead of a scheduled Malaysia Agreement 1963 meeting in Kota Kinabalu, Zaid cautioned against allowing political motivations to dictate the outcome of negotiations, specifically concerning the role of Petros as the exclusive gas aggregator for the state. He emphasized that the federal government must maintain transparency when managing vital energy resources and warned against trading national assets for political backing. Zaid’s remarks highlight concerns about the balance of power between federal authorities and state entities regarding the management of Malaysia's hydrocarbon reserves.
