US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that the Department of Defense has officially classified Chinese-funded cultural centers, previously known as Confucius Institutes, as threats to national security. Washington maintains that these entities serve as propaganda instruments for the Chinese Communist Party. According to Hegseth, the government identified approximately 80 new organizations operating across 30 American universities under altered names and charters. Officials allege these groups maintain the original objective of infiltrating academic environments and misappropriating intellectual property. Consequently, the Pentagon has moved to add these entities to its list of security threats to prevent further influence on American students and the potential theft of sensitive research.
