A 44-year-old California resident, Christine Chao, has been charged with second-degree automobile homicide after a fatal collision on Interstate 15 in Utah. Authorities allege that Chao was viewing pornography on her mobile device shortly before the accident occurred on June 12, 2026. The crash involved three vehicles in a construction zone where traffic had decelerated. Investigators noted an absence of skid marks, suggesting the defendant failed to apply her brakes before striking the vehicle ahead, which subsequently hit another car. The incident resulted in the death of 66-year-old Scott LaVar Lichfield, who sustained a fatal head injury while sitting in the rear of one of the impacted vehicles. Chao reportedly admitted to the circumstances surrounding the event during questioning by law enforcement officials.
