China has successfully utilized its state-backed GW satellite constellation to facilitate communication and data transfer across Arctic regions. During recent polar expeditions, research vessels and stations, including the Qinling base in Antarctica, conducted stable video conferences and transmitted over 100 gigabytes of data. This low-orbit satellite system, which aims to deploy nearly 13,000 units by 2035, provided reliable connectivity despite harsh environmental conditions. The technology enabled remote medical consultations and the real-time transmission of oceanographic data from domestic buoys, reducing reliance on foreign satellite providers like Iridium and Inmarsat. With video latency under one second and consistent broadband speeds, this development marks a significant advancement in China's ability to support polar research and maritime operations through independent, domestically developed infrastructure.
