Chinese President Xi Jinping and Swiss Confederation President Guy Parmelin met on Friday to observe the formal signing of several cooperation agreements. The primary focus of the meeting was the protocol to upgrade the existing free trade agreement between the two nations. This updated framework includes enhanced commitments regarding the exchange of goods, services, and investment, alongside modernized regulations for digital trade, competition, and sustainable development. The original free trade deal between China and Switzerland was established in 2013 and became effective the following year. Currently, Switzerland ranks as China’s seventh-largest European trading partner, while China remains Switzerland's primary trading partner in Asia. Official figures indicate that bilateral trade volume between the two countries reached 49.04 billion dollars in 2025. Additional documents signed during the ceremony addressed collaboration in scientific research, employment, and media sectors.
