The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has issued a work stoppage order against Atienza InterIsland Ferries Inc. after a fire on the MV June Aster resulted in at least 77 deaths. The suspension affects six vessels and follows an investigation that revealed multiple labor policy violations, such as the lack of occupational safety programs and a designated safety officer. Labor Secretary Francis Tolentino stated that the fleet is barred from sailing until the company addresses these safety gaps. Despite the suspension, the operator is required to continue paying its employees' salaries. The firm has until October 23 to comply or face a fine. Preliminary findings from the Bureau of Fire Protection suggest the blaze may have been caused by improperly stored chlorine reacting with asphalt cargo. Currently, 60 victims have been identified, while 11 others remain unidentified.
