A catastrophic event occurred on August 26 when a massive section of ice and rock detached from Langtang Lirung, causing a landslide equivalent to a 5.2 magnitude earthquake. The resulting debris flow surged through the Lhende Khola and Bhotekoshi-Trishuli river systems, causing widespread devastation. The force of the slurry destroyed local villages, compromised critical bridges, and obstructed hydropower tunnels with sediment. Furthermore, the Gyirong-Rasuwagadhi border facility, a vital hub for China-Nepal commerce, was completely obliterated. By September 5, official reports from disaster management authorities confirmed 1,344 fatalities, with nearly 5,000 individuals still missing. The casualties include a significant number of children, as well as international tourists and pilgrims who were in the affected districts during the disaster.
