The Hong Kong government has initiated land resumption operations in the northern New Territories to facilitate the HK$224 billion Northern Metropolis project. This massive development initiative aims to transform approximately one-third of the city’s land—including existing villages, agricultural areas, and natural wetlands—into a high-tech hub. The project is designed to foster closer economic integration with mainland China, diversify the local economy, and increase the housing supply. However, the development has led to the demolition of long-standing residential properties, forcing elderly residents and families to vacate their ancestral homes. In areas like Kwu Tung, government officials have begun clearing sites to make way for the new infrastructure. While the administration views the metropolis as a strategic necessity for future growth, the transition has caused significant personal loss for those living in the affected rural communities.
