A recent report on the state of the climate in Africa indicates that glaciers located on three prominent mountains in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania are rapidly disappearing. Data concerning Mount Kenya, the second-highest peak on the continent, reveals a 96% reduction in ice cover over the last 115 years. Experts project that these ice caps will likely vanish entirely within the next three to five years. Glacier ice is typically formed through the accumulation of snow over long periods, which remains and compresses over decades. However, rising temperatures have disrupted this natural cycle. The study highlights that the glaciers on Mount Kenya, Mount Kilimanjaro, and the Rwenzori mountains are all facing this critical decline, marking a significant shift in the region's environmental landscape as these iconic white peaks lose their permanent ice cover.
