A 34-year-old Indonesian domestic helper, Maria Inggrid Seran, received an eleven-week prison sentence for physically abusing a 69-year-old woman under her care. The victim, who suffers from dementia and requires assistance with daily tasks, was assaulted by the helper during breakfast. Evidence of the abuse, which included slapping the victim's face and head as well as pinching her nose, was obtained through surveillance cameras installed by the victim's family. Seran had been employed to care for the elderly woman since March 2023, during which time the victim's health had significantly declined, leaving her entirely dependent on the worker for mobility and feeding. Following the discovery of the footage, a police report was filed, resulting in the helper's arrest and subsequent conviction.
