Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said announced that the government is currently evaluating whether to grant legal protections to political donors as part of a proposed political financing law. During a press briefing, the minister outlined nine key areas currently under review to ensure transparency and accountability in party funding. These parameters include defining the scope of the legislation, establishing a regulatory body, setting donation limits, and implementing strict prohibitions on foreign funding. Additionally, the government is considering requirements for traceable financial transactions, mandatory auditing, and clear reporting protocols. Officials are also determining appropriate penalties for potential violations. This legislative effort aims to create a structured framework for political contributions, though authorities are still deliberating on the specific technical challenges regarding donor immunity from anti-corruption investigations.
