Former professional boxer Manny Pacquiao has officially re-entered the Philippine political arena following his appointment as the lead convener of the National Anti-Poverty Commission. The 47-year-old athlete, who previously served in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, joined the cabinet of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. this week. Pacquiao, the only boxer to secure world titles in eight distinct weight classes, stated that his personal history of extreme hardship informs his commitment to this new role. His previous political endeavors include a presidential campaign in 2022 and an unsuccessful attempt to regain a Senate seat in 2025. In his new capacity, he is tasked with overseeing and synchronizing national initiatives aimed at alleviating poverty across the country, drawing upon his own experiences of homelessness and hunger during his youth to guide his policy approach.
