Canadian military officials confirmed that a deadly blaze at the Wainwright base in Alberta was ignited by live grenade training. Brigadier-General Vanessa Hanrahan stated that strong winds caused the fire to intensify and spread rapidly from the grenade range into a secondary training area. Because the flames reached a restricted danger zone, firefighting crews could not intervene directly. The incident occurred during combat drills involving the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, who were preparing for an upcoming deployment to Latvia. The tragedy resulted in four fatalities and left 39 soldiers injured, 27 of whom needed hospital care. This event is considered one of the most severe peacetime accidents in the history of the Canadian Armed Forces. The Wainwright facility remains a primary site for large-scale training exercises involving personnel from various NATO nations.
