The recurring issue of transboundary haze has significantly impacted students across Malaysia, leading to widespread school closures in multiple states including Johor, Selangor, and Sarawak. According to recent Ministry of Education guidelines issued on October 14, educational institutions are mandated to shut down if the Air Pollutant Index surpasses 200, while outdoor exercises are prohibited once the index hits 100. These environmental conditions have caused prolonged interruptions to the academic calendar and the daily routines of many young people. While the suspension of classes is a necessary measure to safeguard student health from poor air quality, experts emphasize that such closures alone are insufficient to address the underlying challenges posed by the haze. There is a growing call for more comprehensive support systems to be implemented for children during these periods of environmental instability to ensure their well-being and continued development.
