The 2026 Global Hunger Index report identifies Sri Lanka as the best-performing nation in South Asia regarding food security. With a score of 10.2, the country ranks 53rd out of 122 nations evaluated worldwide. This figure represents a notable long-term improvement, as the index has steadily decreased from 22.1 in the year 2000. Other regional neighbors recorded higher hunger scores, including Nepal at 14.5, Bangladesh at 19.2, India at 24.1, Pakistan at 25.5, and Afghanistan at 28.6. While the data indicates a positive trajectory for Sri Lanka, the nation is still classified within the moderate hunger category. This status suggests that despite recent progress, the country continues to face ongoing obstacles related to nutrition and consistent access to food supplies for its population.
