Sri Lanka has formally initiated the second phase of its cultural restitution program by requesting the return of six historical items currently held in the Netherlands. This development coincides with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations. Deputy Minister Anil Jayantha Fernando announced the request during a recent reception in Colombo. This initiative follows a successful 2023 repatriation, where the Rijksmuseum returned six significant objects, including traditional weaponry and a cannon from the Kandyan Kingdom era. These items were originally taken during the colonial period and remain deeply significant to Sri Lankan heritage. The ongoing collaborative research between the two countries aims to facilitate the return of these cultural treasures, emphasizing the importance of historical preservation and bilateral cooperation in addressing colonial-era acquisitions.
