Illegal tree felling continues unchecked within Sri Lanka's Bambaragala Forest Reserve, a vital part of the environmentally sensitive Knuckles mountain range. Despite its status as a world heritage site, significant destruction has occurred, with large, ancient trees being removed by organized groups utilizing advanced equipment. The Matale Government Agent, Karunasiri Perera, expressed unawareness of the ongoing activities, questioning why relevant authorities had not informed him. Local residents reported repeatedly notifying the Rattota Police about the illicit operations, yet no measures were taken to halt them. They also highlighted that perpetrators exploited the recent curfew period to intensify their logging activities without hindrance. In contrast, the Ratthota Divisional Secretary, Dinipriya Herath, confirmed an investigation into the incidents and stated that legal proceedings have commenced against those involved under the Public Property Act. Residents have urged for continuous protection of the entire Knuckles range.
